Eternal Darkness is a site specific sound installation for a large water reservoir, turned into a huge pipe instrument, where visitors can sonically and physically experience massive low frequency excitations of the room. The low drones are contrasted with occasional higher pipe organ-like pitches that seem to have no physical origin, bouncing off the walls in endless echoes.
The pitches at times might form almost familiar musical harmonies, distant collective memories of themes just to fall apart again and disappear. The sonic experience of the installation is strongly dependent from the listening position, visitor are encouraged to walk around and explore the spatial distribution of resonances in the almost complete dark cistern as part of the composition.
Eternal Darkness is based on a physical modelling software written by the artist. The algorithm simulates the properties of a real organ pipe with all its resonances, turbulences and noises caused by the movement of air through a virtual pipe. Several of those pipes are playing a selection of fragmentary musical themes, forming an ever changing slow counterpoint.
